Did You See the Flyover / Flypast at the QE II Celebration?

The flyover for the celebration of British Queen Elizabeth II's 70th year on the throne included the mandatory flyover / flypast of military aircraft with their modern supersonic design, jet engines, and flashy red-white-blue smoke displays.  The aircraft that caught my eye, though, were the World War II aircraft flying in a formation similar to this one:

Were it not for the Royal Air Force's Spitfires and Hurricanes and the diverse group of pilots who flew them against Hitler's Luftwaffe in the 1940 Battle of Britain, it's hard to see how Hitler and his thugs would ever have been expelled from continental Europe.  The bravery, tenacity, and expertise of the RAF and Polish fliers prompted British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to make his famous remark, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

If you'd like more information on the Battle of Britain, there's plenty available here:  Battle of Britain.

If you're interested in the doings of the Queen's 70th anniversary on the British throne, this article has good coverage of the on-going event:  Forbes Article, QE II 70th Anniversary.

Enjoy!

It's the Nordic Hammer Guy Again

Once again, it's been a fairly noisy night in Norman and on south.

P.S.  My back yard now has several downed tree branches, thanks to the last several days of storms.  How can the trees still have any branches at all?  --CLO   02 June 2022

_From Sentinel Ridge_ Returns!

After a layoff of several years, From Sentinel Ridge is coming back to life so that I can continue in the blogging realm free of the oversight of the delightful management at Facebook.

We (the Oateses) spent the end of May attending end-of-school festivities around town.  Here are a couple of pictures from our auxiliary granddaughter's graduation.

That's all for now.  I'll figure out how to post videos and post some more stuff later.  Gotta figure out how to turn on comments, too.

Debunking Climate Change Denial

Why bother to debunk deniers? It's the most important issue we will *ever* face. It's literally the survival of human civilization. If we continue dumping CO2 (and methane, too) into the atmosphere, NOTHING ELSE WE DO OR DON'T DO WILL MATTER, and time is running out. We are setting in motion a climate catastrophe that we will soon be unable to stop, no matter what we do. Is that the legacy you want to leave your grandchildren and their grandchildren? I doubt it.

Below are some articles that should aid in the debunking of climate change denier's myths and disinformation.

Tired of global warming / climate weirding deniers spreading baloney? Here's a guide to their most frequently promulgated nonsense items and links to the correct information.

  • If video is more to your taste ...

    www.slate.com
If you think the climate isn’t changing, well, I've got some bad news for you. It is. Of course the climate’s changing. It always does. The problem is on top of that incredibly slow natural variation, the climate is changing due to human influence, and it’s changing fast. Droughts, floods,...

  • Organized a bit differently ...

    grist.org
Below is a complete listing of the articles in “How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic,” a series by Coby Beck containing responses to the most common skeptical arguments on global warming. There are four separate taxonomies; arguments are divided by: Stages of Denial, Scientific Topics, Types of Argument…

  • Why bother? Uniformed, intentionally deceptive people with big megaphones are spewing nonsense and being believed.

    From the article ...
"Limbaugh took Rose's misleading claims about Arctic sea ice, and then made them even wronger by saying the ice was at record size for this time of year. That is complete and utter bilge. The extent of sea ice for September 2013 was far lower than the 1981-2010 average, by two standard deviations (think of a standard deviation like a letter grade; if the average is a C, then this year's ice level is an F). The actual sea ice 'death spiral' is dramatic, scary, and all too real.

"And that is precisely why we must keep being vocal, keep fighting this kind of nonsense. Because it's bad enough all by itself, but it gets self-amplified by the deniers until it no longer resembles anything close to reality. Yet their audience will still listen. And their audience is vast."

The people who deny climate change have a very large megaphone, and a lot of motivation to use it.

Weapons of Math Instruction

(widely available on the Web in multiple versions beginning c. 2002)

At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a protractor, a T-square, a slide rule, and a calculator.  At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement. The man is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search for absolute value. They use secret code names like x and y and refer to themselves as unknowns, but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are 3 sides to every triangle," Ashcroft declared.

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes. I am gratified that our government has given us a sine that it is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs who are willing to dis-integrate us with calculus disregard. Murky statisticians love to inflict plane on every sphere of influence," the President said, adding: "Under the circumferences, we must differentiate their root, make our point, and draw the line."

President Bush warned, "These weapons of math instruction have the potential to decimal everything in their math on a scalene never before seen unless we become exponents of a Higher Power and begin to factor-in random facts of vertex."

Attorney General Ashcroft said, "As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertainty of: though they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks."
