Norman: No Shortage of Activities

If you’re short of things to do in Norman, you must not be into museums, festivals, parades, restaurants, or big-time college athletics.

J-79 Engine

In the 1970s, the J-79 engine was my baby for test software maintenance and development of fuel control tests via the Automated Test System for Jet Engine Accessories, ATSJEA.  BIG fun!

J-79 Engine Test with Afterburner

The big roar of higher power settings starts at about 6:00, and the afterburner (Brit. “reheater”) lights up shortly after 7:00.   It’s not quite as impressive as the F-111’s  TF-30 zoned afterburner, but it’ll get your attention!

Can you say bombshell?

Colbert describes Cassidy Hutchinson’s smoking gun testimony.

Tell your (grand)kids to remember this one so they can tell *their* grandkids.  It’s beginning to look a lot like 1973 (Nixon).

Big as Texas!

Texas is approximately as big as France.  (Map)

Just for the record, Alaska is more than twice as big as Texas.  Now *that’s* BIG!  (Map)

Listening

I’m sitting under the self-pruning sweet gum tree out back (looking for a football helmet to wear?) listening.

• Wind rustling leaves in the trees

• Locust-like insect chirping away

• Traffic roaring on I-35

• Small reciprocating engined aircraft approaching Westheimer Airport (KOUN)

• Wind chime announcing small puffs of wind

• TV audio of Florence, Italy travel guide playing

• Dogs almost silently stalking squirrels atop stockade fence

• Low-bypass turbofan engine on military aircraft approaching Tinker AFB (KTIK), whistling as only supersonic engines at low power settings (flight idle?) do

• High-bypass turbofan engines at low power setting whistling as an airliner approaches Will Rogers World Airport (KOKC)

• Male and female cardinals almost silently scouting the freezer-burned ice that wound up under the sweet gum tree with me (are the thinking about throwing a party later?)

• Heavy multi-engined propeller-equipped aircraft approaching Westheimer (good grief, are we fighting WW II again?)

• Blackbirds yelling raucously at each other

• Motorcycle roaring down section line road with loud muffler

• Cardinals battling in a tree near the back fence, exchanging loud unpleasantries

• Two squirrels in a small mulberry tree, cussing their canine tormentors, below

(Crepe myrtle that barely escaped the great sub-zero freeze of winter of 2020-‘21)

The self-pruning sweet gum tree

The big, dead branch in the sweet gum tree came crashing down this morning.   I was glad it chose a time when neither the dogs nor their humans were under it!

Border Collies

This kind of thing, done this early (3.5 months) gives you some idea of how quickly BCs learn:

There’s so much more to it than that, though.   BCs are more than just smart.  They seem to be mind readers at times.

If I had only known …

What would I tell my 18 year old self?

Take speech and drama courses!  You’re gonna spend 17 years teaching computer science, engineering, and math (OU 1 year, OCCC 16 years).

Sorry, Mom.

Done!

 That’s all, folks!

Early Texas: the Comanches, Folsom Museum

An interesting Old West site on Facebook is the Folsom Museum. Try it, you'll like it.

For an interesting article on the Comanche people, scroll down to "The Comanche – Horsemen of the Plains

P.S. The White option on the text background color made a mess of this posting when it's viewed on a cell phone.  Sorry. I'm still re-learning the blogger features and foibles.  --CLO

Did You See the Flyover / Flypast at the QE II Celebration?

The flyover for the celebration of British Queen Elizabeth II's 70th year on the throne included the mandatory flyover / flypast of military aircraft with their modern supersonic design, jet engines, and flashy red-white-blue smoke displays.  The aircraft that caught my eye, though, were the World War II aircraft flying in a formation similar to this one:

Were it not for the Royal Air Force's Spitfires and Hurricanes and the diverse group of pilots who flew them against Hitler's Luftwaffe in the 1940 Battle of Britain, it's hard to see how Hitler and his thugs would ever have been expelled from continental Europe.  The bravery, tenacity, and expertise of the RAF and Polish fliers prompted British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to make his famous remark, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

If you'd like more information on the Battle of Britain, there's plenty available here:  Battle of Britain.

If you're interested in the doings of the Queen's 70th anniversary on the British throne, this article has good coverage of the on-going event:  Forbes Article, QE II 70th Anniversary.

Enjoy!

It's the Nordic Hammer Guy Again

Once again, it's been a fairly noisy night in Norman and on south.

P.S.  My back yard now has several downed tree branches, thanks to the last several days of storms.  How can the trees still have any branches at all?  --CLO   02 June 2022

_From Sentinel Ridge_ Returns!

After a layoff of several years, From Sentinel Ridge is coming back to life so that I can continue in the blogging realm free of the oversight of the delightful management at Facebook.

We (the Oateses) spent the end of May attending end-of-school festivities around town.  Here are a couple of pictures from our auxiliary granddaughter's graduation.

That's all for now.  I'll figure out how to post videos and post some more stuff later.  Gotta figure out how to turn on comments, too.
