Weapons of Math Instruction
(widely available on the Web in multiple versions beginning c. 2002)
At New York 's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a protractor, a T-square, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement. The man is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.
"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search for absolute value. They use secret code names like x and y and refer to themselves as unknowns, but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are 3 sides to every triangle," Ashcroft declared.
When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes. I am gratified that our government has given us a sine that it is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs who are willing to dis-integrate us with calculus disregard. Murky statisticians love to inflict plane on every sphere of influence," the President said, adding: "Under the circumferences, we must differentiate their root, make our point, and draw the line."
President Bush warned, "These weapons of math instruction have the potential to decimal everything in their math on a scalene never before seen unless we become exponents of a Higher Power and begin to factor-in random facts of vertex."
Attorney General Ashcroft said, "As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertainty of: though they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks."

2012-09-24, Beach Cruiser Revival
They were obviously trying to get the attention of male Baby Boomers, and they succeeded. Waiting for my oil change at Wal-Mart, my eyes were assaulted by several brightly-painted, 32" (yes, thirty-two inch!) "beach cruiser" style bikes.
They are single-speed, coaster brake, balloon tire, tough-as-a-boot bikes, big enough that I can barely swing my leg over, and I'm 6' 3" / 191 cm. It's a throwback to the 1930s-'50s and my first uncomplicated, pre-English racer, definitely pre-mountain bike two-wheeling experience.
It sits really well. Wonder how it rides?

2012-07-27, Exploration of the Texas Panhandle, 1850s, Capt. R.B. Marcy
Chuck Oates shared Traces of Texas's status.
Umm, I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if you're a newcomer to the Texas Panhandle look at the sky, not at the ground. The grandeur of the magnificent thunderstorms and the beauty of the sky's-on-fire sunrises and sunsets can be grasped immediately. The beauty of the vast, trackless ocean of short grass takes longer to appreciate, but is equally gorgeous.
(You can take the boy out of the Panhandle, but you can't take the Panhandle out of the boy. Sign me "Alive and Well in Oklahoma, Captured by Chickasaws")

The Texas quote of the day, July 26th: "When we were upon the high table-land, a view presented itself as boundless as the ocean. Not a tree, shrub, or any other object, either animate or inanimate, relieved the dreary monotony of the prospect .... it is a region almost as vast and trackless as the sea ---- a land where no man, either savage or civilized, permanently abides; it spreads forth into a treeless, desolate waste of uninhabited solitude, which always has been, and must continue, uninhabited forever." ------ Captain Randolph Marcy, recording his first impressions of the Texas Panhandle in his diary, 1847
