I’ve stood just behind the operator position when F-111 (TF-30), F-4 (J-79), and F-105 (J-75) engines were operating in afterburner (reheater in the UK). It’s been decades ago, but it’s not an experience one forgets. If you get the chance to see afterburner operation in person, DON’T pass it up.

The engine pictured is used on an F-16 fighter. I’m not sure if it’s an F100 or an F110 engine. Both engines are used on the F-16.

Whichever engine it is, its exhaust nozzle controller (ENC) had a busy couple of minutes adjusting the engine’s “turkey feathers” to keep the engine’s exhaust nozzle the appropriate size for the power setting.
