WINDPOWER 2008 Conference
Wind power manufacturers and interest groups from around the world gathered in Houston last week to highlight the renewable energy source that's available now. As those of us in Oklahoma are sometimes all too well aware, the U.S. has an abundance of wind power resources. The question is will we enact policies to ensure that we create wind power manufacturing jobs in the U.S., or will we continue only to try to increase supplies of oil, a resource that has probably already peaked. (Translation: will we get smart in time or will we continue to live in the past and miss the boat on leadership and JOBS in wind energy and other renewable resources? There ain't gonna be much more oil supplied, no matter what we do!)
Thank goodness, things should begin to get better in November/January, since both U.S. presidential candidates seem to have at least a rudimentary understanding of the energy situation and the renewable energy solutions to the present problems. Whomever you support, be sure to elect people to Congress who will not block renewable energy efforts and who'll think in Twenty-first Century terms, not Twentieth--or for many Oklahoma politicians, Eighteenth.

Enjoy your (very windy) week,
Prof. Oates
