Palm Centro

Despite my newly-achieved state of poverty or at least near-incomelessness, I am now a user of Pivot/Sprint's Palm Centro cell phone, thanks to the generosity of my daughter and son-in-law. (I've finally lived long enough to become a burden to my kids!)

What a REALLY cool cell phone / personal digital assistant the Centro is! In addition to making cell phone calls, I can now send and receive e-mail from my Cox and Gmail accounts, synchronize my calendar and contacts with my PC's MS-Outlook application, surf the net including sites like mine at chuckoates.com that aren't built for mobile access, synchronize my audio, video, and picture files, watch TV (!), calculate spreadsheets, read and write Word documents, access Google Maps and half a thousand other functions. I'm amazed.

I've been around since computers had 32K (that's K not M or G) 16-bit words or less of main memory and $49,000 three-megabyte hard drives as big as washing machines, so I've been amazed many times by Moore's Law (the capability of devices doubles and the price halves every 18 months or so), but the Centro, available for $100 after rebates with a two-year service contract, takes the cake!

I'll post more after I've used the machine a bit--and as soon as I pick my jaw up off the floor.
